A Tale of Two Surgeries

Both Ryker and Jax had to have surgery over the last couple of months. Ryker had a blocked tear duct since he was born and his eye would get pretty goopy and sore. When he turned one our pediatrician said lets do the surgery so we headed down to Primary Children's in Utah. We had a day to play after our intake visit so we went to play at the Discovery Center in Salt Lake. The boys had a great time. That night we met Eric, Brett, Lindsey, and my cousin Ashley at Olive Garden for some yummy dinner. The next morning I fed Ryker a bite of muffin before I remembered he wasn't supposed to eat anything. Oops! The staff at Primary Children's were so great working us in later into the schedule so we didn't have to make another trip. Surgery is no fun and a little scary but I don't think there is anything cuter that little guys in hospital gowns. As we were in post op care they told us that as soon as he could hold some water down we could head back to the hotel. They also told us that nausea as a side effect was not very common in someone so young so we gave him a chocolate pudding. He threw it all up in his car seat on the way back to the hotel and continued throwing up for the next few days. The surgery was a success and his eye has been perfect ever since.

Jax has had an umbilical hernia since he was born. The doctors said that it should heal on its own but it hadn't got any smaller so we decided to see if they would do the surgery sooner than later. We took another trip down to Primary Children's to visit with the doctor who said he recommended doing the surgery but we had to wait a week before we could get on the schedule so the boys and I went and spent the week with my parents and Luke met us back in Utah (see next post). Jax was the first surgery of the day so we were all looking like zombies. Jax was having a great time playing doctor and driving the car around and went back to surgery with the anesthesiologist like a champ. After surgery he was pretty groggy and slept for a long time. They wouldn't let us go home until he kept down some liquid but he was pretty reluctant to drink anything. The nurse brought some ice chips and that did the trick along with some PJ Masks on the tv and he was a pretty happy camper. We drove home that afternoon. Jax was moving like an old man for about a week and then was his active self again. Another successful surgery.
